Introducing Luna Diabetes: Our Journey and a Pivotal Milestone

Written by John Sjolund | October 22, 2024

For as long as I can remember, managing diabetes has been an ever-present part of my life. Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of four, I've lived through every imaginable challenge, sleepless nights, and constant worry about keeping my glucose levels in check. In the early years, my diabetes was managed through twice daily bovine insulin injections and urine glucose testing, then came more rapid blood glucose testing, then insulin pens, then better analog insulins, smart insulin pens, CGM and then - holy smokes - starting to close the loop thanks to the incredible work of Dana Lewis. I had seen the holy grail as I sat alone at night in my apartment in Stockholm, building this first automated insulin delivery system at night when my twin boys (occasionally) slept at night ten years ago.

That personal experience of waking up every morning with my blood sugar in range—almost totally removing CGM alarms and alerts from my life—not having to wake up to go to the bathroom—was life-changing for me and my family—and this is what inspired the founding of Luna Diabetes and joining forces with Jon Brilliant and Sean Saint.

At Luna, we believe in creating a more straightforward, safer, and more balanced approach to diabetes care, especially regarding nighttime glucose control. Our goal is to make the most advanced technologies, with significant clinical benefits, much more accessible to drastically more people. I believe we are achieving this goal in the most significant way ever in our careers with Luna. For us, it’s about making diabetes less complex and less costly so we can focus on everything other than diabetes more of the time.

Did you know that over 90% of everybody who takes insulin uses insulin pens? Did you know that despite how amazing insulin pumps are for some people, the overwhelming majority of people living with diabetes are unwilling or unable to use one?

Did you know that the average person with Type 1 Diabetes spends 40% of every night with high glucose above 180 mg/dl. For Type 2 Diabetes, this is 40% of each and every night above 250 mg/dl. And 77% of people with T1D say their sleep quality is poor. We can do better! That’s why we created Luna.

Luna is the world’s smallest patch pump. It offers the simplest onboarding experience of any AID system and the first algorithm designed for use with insulin pens.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce a significant step forward in that mission: the start of our Pivotal Trial for Luna’s first product, a groundbreaking therapy designed to help people with insulin-requiring diabetes who are unwilling to wear a traditional insulin pump to experience the wonder of automated insulin delivery.

Why Luna?

Luna was born out of necessity. For years, we knew the difficulties of nighttime glucose management firsthand. With Luna, we wanted to create a product that not only improves sleep for people living with diabetes but also ensures they wake up refreshed, ready to take on the day without the burden of complicated diabetes management during the night. It's a product that works harmoniously with your insulin pens and continuous glucose monitors, providing peace of mind during the hours you need it most.

Our Pivotal Trial: What It Means

Starting this trial is a significant milestone for us, bringing us closer to offering Luna to the millions of people who could benefit from it. The trial will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of our system, and it’s a significant step toward regulatory approval. We are confident that the results will demonstrate how Luna can revolutionize how people manage diabetes at night.
